Royalist was built in 1971 by Groves and Gutteridge in Cowes, Isle of Wight to a design by Colin Mudie. The Sea Cadets new brig was named Training Ship Royalist by HRH Princess Anne on 3 August 1971. In 1992, Princess Anne attended the rededication of Royalist after an extensive refit in Lymington.

In 1992, Princess Anne attended the rededication of Royalist after an extensive refit in Lymington.Royalist is owned and operated by the Sea Cadet Association and the ship provides about 800 cadets with berths a year.
